Formation of surfactants at the interface in emulsion polymerization
Formation of surfactants at the interface in emulsion polymerization. Pravednikov, A. N.; Simakova, G. A.; Gritskova, I. A.; Prokopov, N. I. (Mosk. Inst. Tonkoi Khim. Tekhnol., Moscow, USSR). Kolloidn. Zh., 47(1), 192-5 (Russian) 1985. CODEN: KOZHAG. ISSN: 0023-2912. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Chemistry of Synthetic High Polymers) Section cross-reference(s): 46 Neutralization of fatty acids with KOH at the interface during emulsion polymn. of styrene results in the formation of emulsifiers and microemulsification which increases the rate of polymn., compared with polymn. wherein the emulsifiers are prepd. and then added to the monomer. Thus, an increase in the rate of polymn. wherein emulsifier was formed in situ at the interface between an aq. KOH phase and a styrene- lauric acid [143-07-7] phase was 1.01%/min, whereas that in a system stabilized by addn. of K laurate [10124-65-9] was 0.68%/min.
Intermolecular interaction of poly(1-butyl-2-methyl-5-vinylpyridinium bromide) with anionic surfactants in aqueous solutions
Intermolecular interaction of poly(1-butyl-2-methyl-5-vinylpyridinium bromide) with anionic surfactants in aqueous solutions. Aleksandrovskaya, S. A.; Tret'yakova, A. Ya.; Barabanov, V. P. (Kazan. Khim.-Tekhnol. Inst., Kazan, USSR). Vysokomol. Soedin., Ser. B, 26(4), 280-3 (Russian) 1984. CODEN: VYSBAI. ISSN: 0507-5483. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 36 (Physical Properties of Synthetic High Polymers) Section cross-reference(s): 46 A conductometric study of the interaction of poly(1-butyl-2-methyl-5-vinylpyridinium bromide) (I) [62720-92-7] cationic polyelectrolyte with K caprate (II) [13040-18-1], K laurate (III) [10124-65-9], and K stearate (IV) [593-29-3] aq. solns. showed that the elec. cond. of I decreased on a addn. of the surfactants and the corresponding titrn. curves exhibited an extremum. The finding was explained by formation of a weakly dissocd. hydrophobic I-surfactant complex. The investigation of the accompanying opacity increase caused by pptn. of the complex gave for the I-surfactant mixt. at 1:1 molar ratio the values 0.88, 0.75, and 0.69 for II-IV, resp. The formation of the complex was confirmed also by variation of IR absorption spectra of the systems. The formation of the complexes explains the strong coagulating effect of I on polystyrene latexes stabilized by anionic surfactants.
