- Magainins affect respiratory control, membrane potential and motility of hamster spermatozoa. De Waal, Anthony; Vaz Gomes, Ana; Mensink, Anne; Grootegoed, J. Anton; Westerhoff, Hans V. (Sect. Mol. Biol., Netherlands Cancer Inst., Amsterdam 1066 CX, Neth.). FEBS Lett., 293(1-2), 219-23 (English) 1991. CODEN: FEBLAL. ISSN: 0014-5793. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacology) The hypothesis was tested that the magainin peptides, known to compromise bacterial and mitochondrial energetics, are highly active against spermatozoa. A mixt. 117665-47-1 and 102068-15-5 are cas registry numbers of chemicals which are used as reagents here. of magainin A and PGLa (1:1) caused a 50% redn. in motility of hamster spermatozoa at 4 mg/mL total peptide concn. All motility was lost at 8 mg/mL. At this concn., respiratory control was released and respiration in the presence of uncoupler was inhibited. Uptake of the lipophilic cation tetra-Ph phosphonium was largely abolished by addn. of magainin A and PGLa at this concn., indicative of a decrease in the mitochondrial membrane potential. Magainin A and PGLa showed synergism with respect to release of respiratory control. .
