The optimal synthetic method was found in the expt. DBNPA was prepd. efficiently by reacting CAA with Br2 in the presence of H2O2. The action of H2O2 is that excessive HBr produced in the reaction was transformed into Br2 which could be recycled.

For the 2 cooling systems studied, DBNPA can be used at pH 9 with acceptable results, as shown by the 3-4 order of magnitude decrease in colony-forming units/mL. One primary advantage of this compd. is that the biocide decomps. quickly to less toxic intermediates and end products at a rate that can be calcd. based on lab hydrolyses of the compd. In field situations, the DBNPA disappeared from the system somewhat faster than predicted by using the previously developed equations.
