Mass spectrometric anal. showed that the effusing vapor was SO2 and that the decompn./vaporization process was CaSO3(s) = CaO(s) + SO2(g), in agreement with vapor mol. wt. detns. The obsd. vaporization process was not the thermodn. most favored one, which would have produced gaseous S2. Obsd. pressures were found to be dependent on the area of the effusion orifice, and the results were extrapolated to zero orifice size to derive the following equation for the equil. pressures of SO2 log p(atm) = -(11,710 .+-. 600)/T + (9.27 .+-. 0.80). The std. enthalpy of formation of CaSO3 at 298 K is -227.0 .+-. 1 kcal/mol.

I powder (bulk d. 0.73 g/dL) and 70 parts CaSO3 was spread to 4 mm thickness on metal, sintered at 250.degree./5 kg/cm2 for 15 min, and the sinter (pore content 20%) was immersed in 20% HCl at 50.degree. to give a 2 mm-thick sheet with pore content 75% and tensile strength 18 kg/cm2.
