DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 36 (Plastics Manufacture and Processing) Reliable predictions of high heating rate pyrolysis phenomena cannot be made from data obtained in conventional low heating rate app., as detd. from pyrolysis studies of 3 reinforced plastics that were heated in N to ￡700° at const. heating rates from 10 to 4200°/min. However, data for each material over a wide range of heating rates are correlated quite satisfactorily by a single kinetic equation, wherein the kinetic parameters are detd. by the quasilinearization technique. A thin-film technique was used to obtain the high heating rate data. The materials studied were a 4:1 mixt. of Nordel 1040 and Neoprene FB reinforced with silica hydrate (I) [10279-57-9], a nitrile rubber reinforced with I and asbestos, and a nitrile rubber reinforced with BKR 2620 [9003-35-4] and powd. boric acid [10043-35-3].

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 66 (Surface Chemistry and Colloids) Section cross-reference(s): 67 Lamellar silicic acids H-magadite, H4Si24O30 and H2Si8O17, obtained by acid treatment of the corresponding natural or synthetic alk. silicates, were characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopy combined with x-ray diffraction, chem. and thermogravimetric analyses. Two types of hydroxyl groups were identified in the 3 samples: (1) OH involved in relatively strong H bonds between layers and which are lost <500°; (2) nearly free OH groups which are eliminated between 500 and 1000°. In the initial silicic acids, surface d. of PH groups is ~3.5OH/100 ?2, and H-H distances between nearest neighboring protons which belong always to adjacent layers, are ~2.5 ?. In the partially dehydroxylated samples (500°), H-H distances between residual OH groups are ~5 ?. Intercalation of polar mols. is controlled by the strength of the interlayer H bonds established between OH groups of the 1st type. The loss of these OH groups created siloxane bridges between the layers and hinders completely interlamellar sorption. .
