DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 66 (Surface Chemistry and Colloids) Inelastic electron tunneling spectra of org. phosphate, org. phosphite, and phosphorous acid adsorbed onto alumina and magnesia surfaces were measured, and the adsorption mechanisms are deduced. Di-Et and tri-Et phosphates react with OH groups on oxide surface to eliminate water and MeOH, resp., and are adsorbed as monobasic anion on Al+ or Mg+. The reaction of tri-Et phosphate proceeds only in its concd. state. Phosphorous acid and di-Me phosphite react with OH groups on the surface as phosphonic acid and its di-Me ester to eliminate water and MeOH, resp., and are adsorbed as anion. Tri-Me phosphite is adsorbed only from its concd. soln. on alumina as anion.
