DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 38 (Elastomers, Including Natural Rubber) Dispersions contg. the high m.p. diol chain extenders hydroquinone bis(.beta.-hydroxyethyl) ether [104-38-1], p-xylylene glycol [589-29-7], and bis(.beta.-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate [959-26-2], eutectic blends of these diols, and mixts. or eutectic blends with 1,4-butanediol, in polyurethane prepolymers, were used to produced large, high-modulus urethane elastomer moldings in thermoplastic injection molding and reaction injection molding equipment. The thermoplastic injection molding systems used were a solid, NCO-terminated prepolymer prepd. from a high m.p. diol and 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (I) or 2,4-tolylene diisocyanate (II), and m. 60-220.degree. dispersed in a high viscosity polyether, polyester-polyol, or polyol-chain extender mixt.; a highly viscous NCO-terminated polyether or polyester prepolymer contg. a dispersion of a solid OH-terminated prepolymer m. 60-220.degree., and prepd. from an excess of 1 of the high m.p. diols and I or II; a similar prepolymer as in the 2nd case contg. a dispersion of one of the high m.p. diol chain extenders; and a quasi-prepolymer and polyester or polyether polyol contg. a dispersion of the high m.p. chain extenders. The reaction injection molding compns. consisted of a mixt. of a polyol, one of the high m.p. diol chain extenders, and a catalyst, at a temp. in the range 20-120.degree. sufficiently high to solubilize or disperse the diol chain extender, and an NCO-terminated quasi-prepolymer at 20-120.degree..

DOCUMENT TYPE: Conference CA Section: 38 (Elastomers, Including Natural Rubber) S-contg. urethane rubbers were prepd. by heating 1 mole liq. polysulfide rubber with 1.5 moles TDI [26471-62-5] for 40-50 min at 75-85.degree., mixing with 0.5 mole diol, e.g., 1,4-butanediol (I) [110-63-4], for 15 min at 75-85.degree., curing the prepolymer for 18-24 h at 80.degree., and vulcanizing 100 parts of the cured polymer contg. 50 parts carbon black with 12 parts TDI dimer at 120.degree. for 60 min. Increasing the mol. wt. of the liq. polysulfide rubber component decreased the 100% modulus, hardness, and glass-transition temp. and increased the elongation at break and rebound elasticity. Replacing I with an arom. diol, such as hydroquinone bis(2-hydroxyethyl) ether [104-38-1], increased the 100% modulus, tensile strength, and hardness and reduced the elongation at break and rebound elasticity. Vulcanizates of the S-contg. urethane rubber were stronger than filled vulcanizates of polysulfide rubbers and had lower glass-transition temp. than polyester-based urethane rubbers. The S-contg. rubbers were also more resistant to radiation. .
