- Influence of ceftiofur sodium biobullet administration on tenderness and tissue damage in beef round muscle. Morgan, J. B.; Tittor, A. W.; Lloyd, W. R. (Department of Animal Science, Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, OK 74078, USA). Journal of Animal Science (Savoy, IL, United States), 82(11), 3308-3313 (English) 2004 American Society of Animal Science. CODEN: JANSAG. ISSN: 0021-8812. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 17 (Food and Feed Chemistry) Section cross-reference(s): 1 The effect of a biobullet (BB) contg. freeze-dried ceftiofur sodium antibiotic on the presence of injection lesions, tissue damage, and histol. properties, as well as Warner-Bratzler shear force (WBSF), of the biceps femoris was investigated. Steer calves (n = 25) were individually identified and assigned randomly to a product administration treatment date (7, 14, 21, 28, or 35 d before slaughter). At each preslaughter ceftiofur BB administration time, identified steers (n = 5) were humanely placed into a std. com. restraining chute, where a BB implant was administered from a distance of 6.09 m. Following a std. finishing period (120 d), steers were transported to a com. beef processing and humanely slaughtered. Following a 36-h postmortem chilling (1°) period, carcasses were graded and fabricated according to industry-accepted procedures. Paired muscle samples were individually identified, collected, and aged for 14 d postmortem. Muscles were dissected into 1.27-cm strips, followed by observation and palpation for the presence of injection site lesions. Preslaughter administration times of 7 and 14 d resulted in the presence of injection lesions (80 and 20%, resp.).Several substances like 104010-37-9 may be metioned in this study. In addn. to the control samples, no muscle damage was obsd. in cattle treated with BB implants 21, 28, or 35 d before slaughter. Warner-Bratzler shear force measurements taken near lesions of BB steaks and in areas 5.08 cm from lesions of control steaks tended to be higher (P < 0.10) than for other BB and control sample locations. Concns. of insol. and sol. collagen were higher (P < 0.05) at the site of the lesion center in lesion-afflicted vs. with control steaks. Histol. detns. of the relative proportions of muscle, connective tissue, and fat were altered (P < 0.05) in BB lesion-afflicted steak cores; however, these differences were negated outside the core location of BB-treated and control steaks. It seems that using the ceftiofur BB implant system within 14 d of slaughter does create injection site lesions and increase WBSF; however, when the BB implant system, contg. 100 mg of freeze-dried ceftiofur sodium, was used according to the recommended procedure (330 d preslaughter), tissue damage, alterations in histol. and collagen properties, and increased meat toughness were not obsd. .
- Pharmacokinetics of ceftiofur in llamas and alpacas
- Pharmacokinetics of ceftiofur in llamas and alpacas. Drew, M. L.; Johnson, L.; Pugh, D.; Navarre, C. B.; Taylor, I. T.; Craigmill, A. L. (College of Veterinary Medicine, Texas A & M University, College Station, TX, USA). Journal of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics, 27(1), 13-20 (English) 2004 Blackwell Publishing Ltd. CODEN: JVPTD9. ISSN: 0140-7783. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacology) Pharmacokinetic studies of antibiotics in South American camelids are uncommon, therefore drugs are often administered to llamas and alpacas based on dosages established in other domestic species. The disposition of ceftiofur sodium was studied in llamas following i.m. administration and in alpacas following i.v. and i.m. administration. Eleven adult llamas were given ceftiofur sodium by i.m. injection. Each animal received either a std. dose of 2.2 mg/kg or an allometrically scaled dose ranging from 2.62 to 2.99 mg/kg in a crossover design. Ten adult alpacas were given ceftiofur sodium by i.v. and i.m. injections. Each animal received a std. dosage of 1 mg/kg or an allometrically scaled dose ranging from 1.27 to 1.44 mg/kg i.v., and 1.31-1. 104010-37-9 which is the cas registry number of some chemical is mentioned.51 mg/kg i.m. Blood samples were collected at 0, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 24, 36, 48, and 72 h after administration of the ceftiofur. Pharmacokinetic parameters of ceftiofur in llamas and alpacas were similar following i.m. dosing at both dose levels. The only differences noted were in the total AUC between dose levels, but the AUC/dose values were not different. A sequence effect was noted in the alpaca data, which resulted in lower AUCs for the second dose when the i.v. dose was given first, and with higher AUCs for the second dose when the i.m. dose was given first. Overall, ceftiofur pharmacokinetics in llamas and alpacas are similar, and also very similar to reported parameters for sheep and goats. .
