In the redn. of 1,4-diacetylbenzene [1009-61-6] in the presence of varying amts. of HOAc 4-(1-hydroxyethyl)acetophenone [15519-23-0], 1,1'-(1,4-phenylene)diethanol [6781-43-7], and polymeric pinacols are formed. Terephthalaldehyde [623-27-8] likewise is reduced to 4-hydroxymethylbenzaldehyde [52010-97-6], terephthalyl alc. [589-29-7], and a polymeric pinacol. A mechanism of the redn. is given and by NMR the mean degree of oligomerization of the pinacols was established.
