DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 18 (Animal Nutrition) Larvae of the mud crab E. depressus showed higher survival and faster development rate from hatching to the megalopa stage when fed a diet of brine shrimp nauplii than when fed rotifers. When the rotifer diet was supplemented with the lipid-free fraction of brine shrimp in encapsulated form, larval growth was not enhanced. However, when only the lipid fraction of brine shrimp was added in encapsulated form to the rotifer diet, larvae showed enhanced survival and development rate to the megalopa as compared to rotifer-fed controls. When the rotifer diet was supplemented with micro-capsules contg. specific polyunsatd. fatty acid, enhanced larval survival and development rate resulted. The greatest effect was achieved on docosahexaenoic acid (w3) [6217-54-5]. The results indicate that long-chain polyunsatd. fatty acids, esp. w3 [10417-94-4] and w3, are significant in promoting successful development to the megalopa.
