The rate of I prodn. can be increased if trichloropicolinic acid, preferably produced by acid hydrolysis of by-products of sym. tetrachloropyridine manufd. by chlorination/chlorinolysis of 6-chloro-2-(trichloromethyl)pyridine [1929-82-4], is added to the II feed. Thus, a mixt. of 3,5,6-trichloropicolinic acid and II in aq. NaOH was electrolyzed in a flow-through cell with a stainless steel 316 anode and a Ag mesh cathode. 1702-17-6 is the cas registry number.
