DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Synthetic High Polymers) The NMR peaks of di-Bu maleate (I) [105-76-0] and di-Bu fumarate [105-75-9] appear at 3.67 and 3.26 .tau. resp.; they can be used to det. the extent of I isomerization during prepn. of polyesters. The method is rapid since no sample treatment, such as hydrolysis, is required and the accuracy is equiv. to other spectrometric methods. The NMR method was used to establish the following catalytic rank of glycols in the isomerization of I during polycondensation: propylene glycol [57-55-6] > ethylene glycol [107-21-1] > 1,4-butanediol [110-63-4] > neopentyl glycol [126-30-7] > diethylene glycol [111-46-6]. When I was heated with PbO at 210.degree. there was practically no isomerization, but when any glycol was also present a high conversion of I to its trans isomer was obtained.

Thus, 60 parts alkyd resin based on long linseed oil 430, glycerol 118, phthalic anhydride 213, and maleic anhydride 5 parts was mixed with dihydrodicyclopentadienyl methacrylate [64525-21-9] 40, Co naphthenate (6% Co) 1, and Me Et ketone oxime 0.25 parts to give a compn. with Gardner-Holdt viscosity Z-2 (60% in xylene), which gave a coating on Al with pencil hardness 2B, Knoop hardness no. 3.6, and mandrel flexibility 76 mm.
