The compns. may also contain a gelation promoter (e.g., Na2Cr2O7). Thus, 1 g quebracho was dispersed in 250 mL of a 0.5 wt.% aq. soln. of a com. hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (6.3% degree of hydrolysis), the soln. was warmed to 130°F, and 64 mL concd. HCl was added. A portion of the soln. was subjected to a test tube thermometer test in which the effect of temp. on the viscosity was obsd. qual. At 200°F a significant increase in viscosity was obsd., and this was considered evidence of gelation. When the HCl soln. used also contained 5 mL of a 10 wt.% aq. soln. of Na2Cr2O7.2H2O [10588-01-9], the gelation of the polymer soln. occurred at 130°F and the gel was stable for several min at >200°F. It was concluded that such compns. can be used in acidizing operations in wells having depths of at least 10,000 ft and at formation temps. of at least 200°F.
