- The effects of phenol and some alkyl phenolics on batch anaerobic methanogenesis
- The effects of phenol and some alkyl phenolics on batch anaerobic methanogenesis. Fedorak, Phillip M.; Hrudey, Steve E. (Dep. Civ. Eng., Univ. Alberta, Edmonton, AB T6G 2G7, Can.). Water Res., 18(3), 361-7 (English) 1984. CODEN: WATRAG. ISSN: 0043-1354. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 60 (Waste Treatment and Disposal) PhOH [108-95-2] and 7 alkylphenols (O- [95-48-7], m- [108-39-4], p-cresol (I) [106-44-5], 2,5,- [95-87-4], 2,6- [576-26-1], 3,4- [95-65-8] and 3,5-dimethylphenol [108-68-9]) were added at various concns. to aliquots of domestic anaerobic sludge in Hungate serum bottles and these were incubated at 37°. The concn. of CH4 [74-82-8] in the headspace gas was monitored to det. if the phenolics were fermented to CH4 or if they inhibited the anaerobic process. Only PhOH and I were fermented to CH4. at 500 mg/L (but not at 300 mg/L) and 2,5-, 3,4- and 3,5-dimethylphenol reduced the rate and the amt. of CH4 produced. 108-68-9 and 95-65-8 are cas registry numbers of chemicals which are used as reagents here. The cresols were inhibitory at 1000 mg/L but not at 400 mg/L. In cultures supplemented with OAc- and propionate (VOA), and in unsupplemented cultures, PhOH at concns. £500 mg/L was fermented to CH4. Between 800 and 1200 mg/L PhOH, CH4 prodn. was neither enhanced nor inhibited relative to control cultures contg. no PhOH. Inhibition of CH4 prodn. was evident when PhOH was present at 32000 mg/L. Thus, the methanogens are less susceptible to PhOH inhibition than are the PhOH degrading acid formers. In similar expts. with I, there was enhanced CH4 prodn. at concns. of £400 mg/L, no enhancement or inhibition at 600 mg/L, and inhibition when I was present at 31000 mg/L. .

- Corrosion resistance of materials in media for the alkylation of phenols by olefins in the presence of heterogeneous catalysts. Egidis, F. M.; Kurochkina, L. G.; Shlykova, G. A.; Listova, M. S. (USSR). Khim. Prom-st. (Moscow), (8), 509 (Russian) 1983. CODEN: KPRMAW. ISSN: 0023-110X. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 55 (Ferrous Metals and Alloys) Section cross-reference(s): 51, 56 Corrosion resistance of welded economically-alloyed steels 14Kh17N2 [12793-24-7], 08Kh22N6T [12661-77-7], 08Kh21N6M2T [12661-69-7], and 10Kh17N13M2T [59093-32-2] and Ti VT1-1 [37333-93-0] in the reactors for phenol [108-95-2] and p-cresol [106-44-5] alkylation by styrene [100-42-5] was studied. The effect of KU-2 resin and synthetic aluminosilicate catalyst AShNTs-3 on the process was evaluated. 12661-77-7 and 12793-24-7 which are cas registry numbers of substances are two of reagents here. Corrosion of materials increased in the presence of a gas phase and changed from the uniform to the pitting one. The Ti was the most resistant material, but steels 08Kh21N6M2T and 10Kh17N13M2T were applicable for welded reactor structures in p-cresol alkylation. .
