DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 73 (Optical, Electron, and Mass Spectroscopy and Other Related Properties) Three new mol. crystals possessing highly polarizable electron systems by interaction with electron-donor and -acceptor substituents were grown and have quasi-optical cryst. structures: N-(4-nitrophenyl)(L)-prolinol (NPP), nitro-4-phenyl-N-(methylcyanomethyl)amine (NPAN), and 3-methyl-4-nitropyrinidine-1-oxide (POM). These crystals being resp. monoclinic (P21) and orthorhombic (Fdd2 and P212121) are under invesitgation both in bulk and waveguide forms. In the case of NAP it is possible to achieve a type-I non-crit. phase-matching at l = 1.15 mm involving the nonlinear coeff. d21 = 200 ′ 10-9 e.s.u. 107023-66-5 and 1074-98-2 which are cas registry numbers of chemicals are mentioned., the highest value of a phase-matchable coeff. measured so far. This measurement was achieved by using a single cryst. NPP layer. Moreover, amplification and parametric emissions for 100 fs pumping at l = 620 nm were demonstrated. Similar expts. were performed on POM in the picosecond range. By using a modified Bridgman-Stockbarger method, some 2-3 cm long NPAN single crystal cored fibers were obtained. .

The results for pyridine-1-oxide and nitro-pyridine-oxide agree well with expt. As regards 3-methyl-4-nitro-pyridine-1-oxide (POM), the dipole moment of 0.22 or 0.48 D obtained for the two Cs conformations considered in this work do not confirm the value suggested by the anal. of the electronic d. maps obtained from crystallog. data (3.5 D). The polarizabilities (WaV = 81 a.u.) and the hyper-polarizabilities (bz = 1050 a.u.) are the first ones obtained theor. Although they cannot be compared with exptl. results because of the difficulty of measuring them, they allow one to understand why POM is an org. material interesting for optoelectronics. .
