DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacology) A single treatment of mice with the steam distillate, nonvolatile Et2O ext. and MeOH ext. of mace, arils of Myristica fragrans (Myristicaceae), caused a prolongation of hexobarbital-induced narcosis, an increase in strychnine toxicity and a decrease in hepatic microsomal drug-metabolizing enzyme activities. With 7 daily consecutive administrations, however, the duration of narcosis was markedly shortened and increases in the hepatic enzyme activities were shown. From the nonvolatile Et2O fraction, macelignan (I) [107534-93-0], a new lignan, m.p. 70-72°, was isolated as an active principle. .
