Study of the radiation-induced bulk polymerization of N-(2,4-dimethylphenyl)maleimide
Study of the radiation-induced bulk polymerization of N-(2,4-dimethylphenyl)maleimide. Kler, N. I.; Ivanov, V. S.; Smirnova, V. K.; Aleksandrovich, M. K. (USSR). Vestn. Leningr. Univ., Fiz., Khim., 22(4), 146-50 (Russian) 1976. CODEN: VLUFBI. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Synthetic High Polymers) Liq. N-2,4-dimethylphenyl)maleimide [1080-52-0] was polymd. in bulk by .gamma. irradn. according to radical, nonstationary chain mechanism with slow initiation; the polymn. was inhibited by 4 organometallic complexes (I [42490-12-0], etc.). The yield (G) of the polymer at irradn. rate 1 Mrad/h increased from 500 to 1600 mol/100 eV at 85 and 120. 14852-76-7 and 26194-27-4 are also in the experiment.degree., resp., and, at 85.degree., it was proportional to the 0.48 power of the dose intensity. The mol. wt. of the polymer was not affected by the temp. at 80-100.degree. and the absorbed irradn. dose. .
The intensification of radiation-induced polymerization through complexation of monomers
The intensification of radiation-induced polymerization through complexation of monomers. Ivanov, V. S.; Konstantinova, E. N.; Migunova, I. I.; Oparina, E. S.; Smirnova, V. K.; Kever, E. E. (Leningrad State Univ., Leningrad, USSR). Proc. Tihany Symp. Radiat. Chem., Volume Date 1976, 4, 583-90 (English) 1977. CODEN: PTSCDP. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Synthetic High Polymers) The electron-donating monomer styrene [100-42-5] and the electron-acceptor monomer N-(2,4-dimethylphenyl)maleimide (I) [1080-52-0] form a charge-transfer complex (A) during g-ray induced polymn. and addn. of A to copolymn. systems contg. heptyl acrylate (II) [2499-58-3] increased the elasticity of the polymer formed due to internal plasticization. The equil. const. for formation of A is 0.025 ± 0.010 L/mol and the extinction coeff is 1970 L-mol-1 cm, indicating a weak complex. In the copolymn. of styrene with I (monomer 1), the copolymer compn. depends little on the monomer feed compn. over a broad range (30-70% styrene), indicating that an alternating copolymer may be forming; the reactivity ratios were r1 = 0.022 ± 0.002 and r2 = 0.003 ± 0.001. In terpolymn. systems contg. 70% II and variable amts. of I and styrene, the max. yield and decompn. temp. (355°) of the terpolymer was obtained at 1:1 molar ratios of I to styrene.
