DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 17 (Food and Feed Chemistry) A method is described that permits the simultaneous detn. of benzoic acid [65-85-0] and sorbic acid [110-44-1] and the Me [99-76-3], Et [120-47-8], Pr [94-13-3], Bu [94-26-8], and heptyl [1085-12-7] esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid (PHB). In a few favorable cases o-phenylphenol [90-43-7] can also be detd. by the same chromatogram. Isocratic HPLC equipment is used. The advantage of this method is that the 2 acids and the PHB esters can be detd. together in the presence of fat. Gradients and addnl. sample prepn. steps involving the sepn. of the preservatives from fat and (or) the sepn. of the acids from the esters or vice versa are not required.
