DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 35 (Synthetic High Polymers) Section cross-reference(s): 25 Dimethyl terephthalate (I) [120-61-6] is prepd. from bis(hydroxyethyl) terephthalates, obtained by glycolysis of waste polyester fiber or film, followed by methanolysis with Mg(OMe)2 [109-88-6] catalyst under essentially anhydrous conditions. Thus, refluxing 1 part 97% poly(ethylene terephthalate) [25038-59-9] waste, 1 part HOCH2CH2OH, and 100 ppm Mg(OAc)2.4H2O gives a soln. of bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate [959-26-2] which is concd. to 70%. Heating this soln. with 4.035 parts MeOH and 0.0048 parts Mg(OMe)2 2 h at 70.degree. and 4 h at 25.degree. gives 0.940 part colorless I, m. 140.7.degree., acidity 0.003% (as HOAc).Except for chemicals metioned above, 41138-37-8 is also used. .

Propylene was polymd. for 2 h at 70°, 0.7 kg/cm2 H partial pressure, and 2 kg/cm2 total pressure in an autoclave contg. 1 L n-heptane, 0.3 g A, 2 mL iso-Bu3Al [100-99-2], and 0.2 mL Me p-toluate [99-75-2] to give isotactic polypropylene [25085-53-4] (97.2 wt.% boiling n-heptane extn. residue). .
