Total saponin contents of Chinese and Korean red ginseng were similar, i.e., 2.20-2.90% of red ginseng prepns. Some differences in ginsenoside contents between Chinese and Korean red ginseng were detected, e.g., ginsenoside Ro content was higher in Chinese than in Korean red ginseng.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacology) Section cross-reference(s): 2 The total ginsenoside (BuOH ext.) fraction inhibited the uptake of radioactive GABA [56-12-2], glutamate (Glu) [56-86-0], dopamine (DA) [51-61-6], noradrenaline (NA) [51-41-2], and 5-HT [50-67-9], but not the uptake of 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) and leucine (Leu) into rat brain synaptosomes. Among the ginsenoside fractions investigated, Fraction III which contains mainly ginsenoside Rd [52705-93-8] was most effective in reducing the uptake of neurotransmitters. The inhibition was in the order GABA = NA > DA > Glu > 5-HT, and this effect was concn. dependent. The inhibitory effect appears to be specific, as this fraction at several concns. failed to influence the uptake of 2-DG and Leu. Similar studies indicated that ginsenoside Rc [11021-14-0] could affect neurotransmitter uptake specifically as well. Since the GABA uptake was most sensitive to the inhibitory action of these ginsenosides, ginseng may exert its action(s) in the central nervous system by affecting the removal of neurotransmitter substances in synaptic regions with GABAergic neurons being one of the major sites of action.
