(I, R3-10 = H or C1-4 alkyl) and a tetracarboxylic dianhydride. 2-Octanone was reacted with phenol to form 2,2-bis(hydroxyphenyl)octane, which was reacted with p-chloronitrobenzene to obtain 2,2-bis[4-(4-nitrophenoxy)phenyl]octane. The latter was reduced to 2,2-bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy)phenyl]octane, which was reacted with pyromellitic dianhydride to form a polyamic acid, which was spin-coated on a glass substrate and heated at 200° for 1 h to form a polyimide film. A liq.-crystal cell contg. this aligning film, which had been rubbed 30 times, had a pretilt angle of 19°.
