DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 3 (Biochemical Interactions) 5-(2-Thienyl)valeric acid (I) [21010-06-0] inhibited the growth of Bacillus sphaericus. The inhibition was restored by th intermediates of biotin [58-85-5] biosynthesis, dethiobiotin (DTB) [533-48-2] and 7,8-diaminopelargonic acid (DAPA) [21738-21-6], as well as biotin. However, the intermediates in earlier steps, 7-keto-8-aminopelargonic acid (KAPA) [4707-58-8] and pimelic acid [111-16-0], had no recovering effect. When Rhodotorula glutinis, which was also sensitive to I, was cultivated in a medium contg. I, the amt. of DTB and biotin in culture filtrate was decreased, whereas that of KAPA was increased. I inhibited DAPA aminotransferase [37259-71-5] activity, which is responsible for DAPA synthesis form KAPA but no other enzyme reactions involved in DTB synthesis from pimelic acid were inhbitited by I. I also inhibited biotin synthesis from DTB. Five other thienyl exhibited no action as biotin antagonists. I inhibited the growth of various microorganisms including bacteria yeasts, molds, and actinomycetes at a concn. of 100 or 500 mg/mL.
