Effects of the cavity size of crown ethers, the degree of crosslinking, the degree of ring substitution, particle size, spacer chains, and solvents on the activity of the polymer-supported crown ethers in the reaction of 1-chloro- [111-85-3] or 1-bromooctane [111-83-1] with aq. NaI or KI were investigated and mechanisms of the reaction were discussed in terms of mass transfer, intraparticle diffusion, and intrinsic reactivity. .

Similar reactions with p-C6H4(CH2Cl)2 [623-25-6] (3 h), CH2:CHCH2Br [106-95-6] (4 h), ClCH2CH2CN [542-76-7] (5 h), and C8H17Cl [111-85-3] (6 h) gave yields of 98, 61, 74, and 39%, resp. Catalysis by Kryptofix 222 [23978-09-8], Kryptofix 222BB [40471-97-4], and dicyclohexyl-18-crown-6 [16069-36-6] was decreasingly effective in that order. Under the same conditions, sol., chloromethylated (33 mol%) polystyrene in the presence of 5 mol% Bu4N+HSO4- gave an 86% degree of substitution and 100% functional yield, compared with 95 an 98, resp., for insol., chloromethylated (67 mol%) polystyrene with 20 mol% catalyst. .
