DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 44 (Industrial Carbohydrates) The structure of pectin (I) [9000-69-5]-sucrose (II) [57-50-1], Ca furcellaran [88845-49-2]-II, k-carrageenan [11114-20-8]-KCl, I-glycerol [56-81-5], and k-furcellaran [70694-75-6]-KCl gels was characterized. The rate of relaxation processes in gels was independent of polysaccharide concn., suggesting that the gels are structurally inhomogeneous, the gel network being formed by the assocn. of macromols. When crosslink breakdown does not involve the unwinding of individual helices, the std. breakdown enthalpy of the crosslinks does not exceed 45 kJ-mol-1, probably due to the low entropy loss on gelation which is typical for semi-rigid chain polymers. When the gelation mechanisms is cooperative, the large decrease in entropy during gelation is compensated by a decrease in enthalpy exceeding 200 kJ-mol-1 due to the formation of H bonds stabilizing the helical conformation. The slow relaxation processes seen in the creep compliance response are assocd. with the breaking of intermol. bonds within the macromol. assocns. which form the gel network.

In the Brown Norway rat, the residual hypotensive action of the sulfated polysaccharides was assocd. with thrombocytopenia. Platelet stimulation did not appear to involve the complement system. Prostaglandins and thromboxane A2 did not seem to play a role in the hypotensive action. Effects of various pharmacol. agents on the action of polysaccharides are described. .
