DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 3 (Biochemical Interactions) Protein SP127, isolated from the culture broth of Bacillus brevis, enhanced the activities of basic and neutral macrolide antibiotics against P. aeruginosa, but showed no synergistic effect with .beta.-lactam, peptide, aminoglycosidic, polyene, or tetracycline antibiotics. The effect of SP127 was seen with P. aeruginosa and several strains of Escherichia coli, but not with Proteus vulgaris and Staphylococcus aureus, indicating that SP127 showed specificity for both antibiotics and target organisms. The action of the protein may be due, at least in part, to an enhancement of antibiotic penetration into cells of P. aeruginosa. .
