DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 57 (Ceramics) A refractory castable mixt. contains fireclay 3-12, Al powder (390%Al) 0.1-5, reaction inhibitor (i.e. gelatin, gum arabic, and citric acid) for Al 30.5, deflocculant (i.e. Na humate, Na silicate, and Na oxalate) 0.01-1.0, setting time accelerator (i.e. Ca(OH)2, CaF2, and CaCrO4) 1-8 wt.%, and a granular refractory (clay, bauxite, Al2O3, periclase, etc.). Water is added and the mixt. is cast. The forms are removed in 2-8 h and 60-70% water is vaporized at 100° in 3-8 h owing to heat from the reaction of Al with water. The casting is cured at 500-800°. Thus, a mixt. of granular grog 70, pulverized Al2O3 10, fireclay 10, Al 2.0, Na humate 0.2, Ca aluminate [11104-48-6] accelerator, and NH4 borate [11128-98-6] reaction inhibitor 0.1 wt. parts was cast with 10.0 wt.% water. Transverse strengths were 18, 20, and 28 kg/cm2 after 24 h aging, 110° drying, and firing at 1000°, resp. No cracks occurred during 144 10 min cycles between room temp. and 800°.
