For amine pKa > 6, products were formed through the intermediacy of 1-hydroxyphosphonates (formed from ionized phosphite), whereas Schiff bases were obsd. as intermediates for pKa < 6 (subsequent to amine protonation of phosphoryl-group O). Thus the 31P NMR signal of hydroxyphosphonate (BuO)2P(O)CH(OH)C6H4F-4 was obsd. di-Bu phosphite/hexahydroazepin/4-fluorobenzaldehyde mixts. .
