The nitro compd. may be added before, during, or after the polymn. Thus, I 50, styrene 50, MeNO2 0.4, and AIBN 0.1 parts were polymd. between glass plates for 22 h at 45.degree. and for 2 h at 100.degree. to give yellowish plates of polymer (II) [9003-54-7]. Heating II at 150.degree. for 30 min caused only a minor increase in color intensity; a similar II prepd. in the absence of MeNO2 was clearly yellow after polymn and strongly yellow after heating.
