DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Chemistry of Synthetic High Polymers) Polystyrene particles are functionalized with monochiral 2,3-epoxypropoxymethyl groups [(S)-1] by an efficient 5-step reaction sequence involving chloromethylation, coupling with glycerol-2,3-acetonide, hydrolysis of the acetonide groups, monotosylation of the resulting diol, and ring closure by base treatment. The polymeric epoxide is reacted with diethylene glycol monomethyl ether under the influence of BF3.Et2O or under basic conditions, and with 1-phenylethylamine using LiClO4 as a catalyst affording b-hydroxyether- and amino alc.-substituted polymers, resp. .
