DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 4 (Toxicology) The effects of 6 triaryl phosphate compds. were tested on the primary productivity of pure algal cultures and natural phytoplankton in lake water. Substitution of the H atom by a Me group in the benzene ring decreased its effect. Tri-Ph phosphate [115-86-6] was the most toxic compd., followed by tolyl di-Ph phosphate [78-31-9], tri-o-tolyl phosphate [78-30-8] and trixylyl phosphate [25155-23-1]. The ortho isomer of tritolyl phosphate was more toxic than the meta- [563-04-2] and para- [78-32-0] isomers. Natural phytoplankton was more sensitive to triaryl phosphate compds. than the pure algal cultures. In addn. to the primary productivity, the reprodn. and nitrogenase [9013-04-1] activity of the algae were also reduced in the presence of tri-Ph phosphate. .
