The spectra of solid solns. of II in I indicated charge transfer complex formation, with the spectral range being increased down to 17,000 cm-1. As the concn. of II was increased, the photosensitization in the absorption band of the polymer increased less strongly than that in the charge transfer band.

In poly(ethyl acrylate) above the glass temp., the reaction was first order. The lifetime of the colored form depended on polymer structure and was longest in polar polymers with high mol. wt. The concept of reaction cavities in the solid soln. was applied to explain the reaction kinetics.
