DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 63 (Pharmaceuticals) The sterilization by ethylene oxide [75-21-8] of medical equipment, esp. heat-sensitive surgical equipment, may be monitored by subsequent desorption of ethylene oxide by treatment with a strongly acidic cation-exchange resin and an indicator means reflecting the results of the adsorption and desorption by indicator-color change. Dowex HCR-W-H [92879-39-5] is powd. and then dyed with Quindine Red [117-92-0] yielding a light yellow powder and the powder is packaged in small increments in a Bard Peel Pak. The Peel Pak was placed in an ethylene oxide sterilizer. After exposure of the surgical goods to ethylene oxide for 1 h and 45 min, the powder turned brilliant red. The surgical goods were removed and placed in an aeration chamber. After 7 days of aeration with air at room temp., the package powder had returned to its yellow color.

Both 4-styrylcyanine and its 2-analog were applied as foliar sprays at 0, 25, 50, 100 and 200 ppm. Four sprays were applied at biweekly intervals. Foliar application of both styrylcyanines at concns. of 25 and 50 ppm enhanced shoot and root systems as well as the yield of essential oil compared with the control treatment. Increasing the concns. used >50 ppm, of both styryls increased the no. of main stems and reduced their fresh wt. and plant height. However, the length of internodes and stems as well as the air-dried wt. of the marjoram stem were unaffected. The effective concn. of the 2 styryls on the air-dried matter yield and oil percentage differed. .
