Low-boiling impurities were removed by distg. off the excess II and treating the residue with an alkali metal ethoxide.Several substances with their cas registry numbers 1193-00-6 and 637-07-0 may be metioned in this study. Thus, a mixt. of 64.3 g 4-ClC6H4OH and 80 g 25% NaOH in PhMe was dehyrated via the PhMe-H2O azeotrope and the resulting 4-ClC6H4ONa as a slurry in PhMe treated with 113 g II (X = Cl), the excess evapd., and the residue stirred with 20.7 g 10% EtONa-EtOH for 1 h at 80.degree. C with distn. of EtOH to give 91.3 g I. The product did not contain low-boiling impurities and only 6 ppm 4-ClC6H4OH, compared with 0.32% low-boiling impurities and 180 ppm 4-ClC6H4OH without the EtONa treatment. .

The wt.-av. mol. wts. of the copolymers are all above 106, and the mol. wt. distributions are monomodal and narrow (Mw/Mn < 4).
