Powder-coated tows were fabricated using a dry powder deposition process at room temp. Two 12k powder-coated yarns were combined to form 6.1-mm wide, 0.127-mm thick ribbons at several line speeds. Quality assessment procedures included acid digestion, photomicroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. Nearly void-free ribbon with minimal thickness and width variation was produced. Depending on processing conditions, between 0 and 13 percent of the phenylethynyl reactions were completed based on the advancement of the glass transition temp. Scanning electron micrographs of fractured ribbon samples demonstrated that high line speeds tend to produce ribbon with poor fiber/matrix adhesion. Material fabricated at slow speed retained substantial melt flow, exhibited a large weld/peel strength, and would be suitable for ATP. .
