DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 38 (Elastomers, Including Natural Rubber) Neoprene rubber vulcanized in the presence of p-quinone bis(O-benzoyloxime) (I) [120-52-5] has superior seawater resistance to that of neoprene rubber vulcanized with dicumyl peroxide, hexamethylenediamine carbamate, Epikote 828, or phenolic resins. For instance, a compn. of Skyprene B-30 (neoprene rubber) 100, phenyl-.beta.-naphthylamine 2, Pb3O4 6, and I 6 parts was vulcanized 20 min at 150.degree. to give test pieces having JIS hardness 42, tensile strength 80 kg/cm2, elongation 520%, 300% modulus 22 kg/cm2, and seawater swelling after 800 h at 50.degree. <2 wt.%, compared with 42, 169, 850, 15, and .apprx.10, resp., for a similar vulcanizate contg. MgO 4, ZnO 5, and ethylenethiourea 0.35 part in place of I.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 39 (Synthetic Elastomers and Natural Rubber) The vulcanization of butyl rubber (Polysar Butyl 301, IIR) and natural rubber (NR) by p-dinitrosobenzene [105-12-4], p-benzoquinone dioxime (I) [105-11-3], I dibenzoate (II) [120-52-5] and chloranil [118-75-2] oxidized by various oxidants was studied. Curing efficiency was good for IIR contg. I or II and Pb3O4. Of the quinone, ~85% was in the form of crosslinks, the remainder probably formed pendant groups. NR could be cured slowly by I or II alone. ZnO or PbO were effective in activating II to give NR vulcanizates with good scorch resistance. Crosslink d. was highest for 1:1 II-Pb3O4. 105-12-4 and 1317-36-8 are just another two chemicals used in this study. Crosslinking efficiency was generally low for quinones with NR. Vulcanization mechanisms are discussed. .
