For example, a lotion was prepd. contg. coumarin [91-64-5] 2, piperonal [120-57-0] 2, methyl naphthyl ketone [93-08-3] 0.5 g, phenylethyl alc. [60-12-8] 10, alc. 650 cm3, and distd. water q.s.p. 1 L.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 17 (Foods) By a combination of UV spectrophotometry nd thin-layer chromatog. vanillin (I) [121-33-5] is detd. in browned butter, and distinction is made between synthetic vanillin and vanilla ext. by identification of accompanying arom. compds. in the latter prepn. Common adulterants may be detected also. The sample is extd. with water-hexane, the absorbance of the H2O detd. at 348 nm, and the vanillin concn. detd. from a std. curve. The H2O is then extd. with Et2O, the ext. thin-layer chromatographed on silica gel GOF 254, developed with CHCl3-iso-PrOH ( by vol.) and spots revealed by UV light (254 nm). The vanillin-to-p-hydroxybenzaldehyde (II) [123-08-0] ratio, const. in vanilla ext., is evaluated by UV densitometry and comparison with std. mixts. and vanilla ext. Under UV light, I, II, ethylvanillin [121-32-4], piperonal [120-57-0], p-hydroxybenzyl alc. [623-05-2], vanillyl alc. [498-00-0], anisaldehyde [26249-15-0], p-hydroxybenzoic acid [99-96-7], vanillic acid [121-34-6], anisic acid [1335-08-6], and coumarin [91-64-5] appear blue on a yellow background. Although not all are sepd. by the solvent system, identification of each compd. is possible by selective spraying with Dingeman reagent (hydrazine sulfate in HCl), 5% KOH, and H2SO4 and examg. in visible and UV light.
