DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 10 (Microbial Biochemistry) Among 21 water-sol. vitamins and related substances, thiamin, pyridoxine, p-aminobenzoic acid, inositol, and hesperidin had little effect on the inactivation of phage J1 by 3 ′ 10-4M ascorbic acid. Pantothenic acid and rutin inhibited the inactivation. Choline and carnitine enhanced the inactivation at 1 ′ 10-4M, but failed to enhance it at the higher concns. Nicotinamide, nicotinic acid, folic acid, anthranilic acid, biotin, and vitamin U enhanced the inactivation at high concns. Orotic acid, cyanocobalamin and FAD enhanced the inactivation at 31 ′ 10-5M. Riboflavin and FMN enhanced the inactivation at 33 ′ 10-7M. Vitamin K5 enhanced the inactivation at 33 ′ 10-8M.

The use of vitamin K [12001-79-5] in prophylaxis against hemorrhagic disease in the newborn, deemed unnecessary by van Doorm, et al. (Ibid. 1977, i, p. 182), is recommended, but in premature infants, deficiencies in vitamin K-dependent factors (not responding to vitamin K administration) should be screened for during the 1st day of life.
