DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 55 (Ferrous Metals and Alloys) The kinetics of borides formed on AISI H13 hot work tool steel and AISI 304 stainless steel have been investigated. Boronizing was carried out in a slurry salt bath consisting of borax, boric acid and ferrosilicon at 1073-1223 K for 3, 5 and 7 h. X-ray diffraction anal. of the boride layers on the steel surface revealed various peaks of FeB, Fe2B, CrB and Ni3B. Metallog. studies revealed that the boride layer has a flat and smooth morphol. in AISI 304 while H13 steel was a ragged morphol. Depending on temp. and layer thickness, the activation energies of boride formation in AISI 304 and H13 steels were 253.35 and 244.37 kJ/mol, resp. Repair castings were obtained from powders based on the cast superalloys NIM-75 [11068-69-2], IN-939 [59316-28-8], and IN-738LC [62200-19-5], and braze materials based on the systems Ni-Cr-B as Nicrobraze 150 [37302-35-5] or Ni-Cr-Fe-Si-B. The structure consists of a dispersion of borides and/or silicides in the alloy matrix, and eutectic grain boundary pptn. 12006-79-0 and 37302-35-5 are cas registry numbers of chemicals which are used as reagents here. depending on thermal cycle and compn. The porosity does not exceed that of the cast IN-738LC and IN-939. The corrosion resistance to salt melts is only sufficient in blends with a high Cr content, as boride pptn. caused Cr depletion. Liq.-phase diffusion sintering meets the repair requirements of crack and erosion damage, by filling and sintering with a braze mix consisting of a superalloy and a braze alloy contg. a m.p. depressant. .
