DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 71 (Nuclear Technology) ThO2 [1314-20-1] specimens contg. oxide and metallic components to simulate a ThO2-based fuel elements following high burnup were studied. Simulation techniques involving isothermal and nonisothermal heat treatment were employed. As found for real UO2-based fuel elements after high burnup, stable Ba zirconate [12009-21-1] type phases were found in the ThO2 at least at .ltoreq.1600.degree.. However, in the ThO2 system, a Nd2Zr2O7 [11096-06-3] synthetic pyrochlore-type phase, not found with UO2, was detected. Formation of this phase was favored over the formation of Ba zirconate under reducing conditions. Under the influence of a high thermal gradient, the simulated fuel elements showed center core melting and equiaxed grains but failed to show columnar grain formation.
