By decreasisng the S/M ratio, the portion of the M-S ionic bonds increased and, correspondingly, the portion nof the S-S and M-M covalent bonds decreased. The M2S3 compds. had a mixed ionic-covalent bond. By the substitution of La atoms in Th3P4-type crystals with Ce or Pr atoms, the lattice priod decreased and the ionic character increased. .
