At the B fiber-Al coating interface, a solid soln. of B in Al, AlB2 [12041-50-8], a-AlB12 [12041-54-2], and b-AlB12 were formed. Neither oxides nor spinels were obsd. Tensile strength of the coated fibers was detd. and compared to that of the uncoated fibers. The coating was removed by etching with 10% HCl to study chem. reaction and identify the phases.

The coating material was TiB2 applied by a 2-step method: 1st, the components (Al2O3 balls) were etched in KOH/NaOH melt and 2% NaF and then coated with Ti in a KCl/NaCl/CaCl2 melt contg. TiH2 and then the balls were packed into B powder and boridized using a know technique at 1000° under Ar for 48 h. The TiB2 coating was corrosion tested and wettability by molten Al and the interface between the TiB2 coating and the Al2O3 substrate was found intact and no grain boundary corrosion was found. .
