DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 57 (Ceramics) Section cross-reference(s): 68, 69 The system HfO2-(0-60 mol%)TiO2 was investigated using x-ray diffraction anal. DTA, m.p. studies, and dilatometry. For samples quenched from 1500 and 1250.degree., single-phase HfTiO4 exists at 36-53% TiO2, with HfO2 coexisting as a 2nd phase at .ltoreq.36% TiO2 and HfO2 coexisting as a 2nd phase at .gtoreq.53% TiO2. Room-temp. lattice parameters of the HfTiO4 phase decreased linearly with compn. for samples quenched from 1500. 13463-67-7 and 12055-24-2 are cas registry numbers of chemicals which are used as reagents here.degree. and furnace-cooled from 1600.degree.. High-temp. lattice parameter studies confirmed the expansion anisotropy of the HfTiO4 phase in the single-phase region. Linear thermal-expansion detns. revealed very low coeff. (<1 x 10-2-6.degree.) for compns. contg. 30-40% TiO2 and relatively high coeffs. (.apprx.4 x 10-6.degree.) for the 25-60 mol% TiO2 compns. The low expansion was attributed to microcracking. .
