DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 73 (Optical, Electron, and Mass Spectroscopy and Other Related Properties) Section cross-reference(s): 76 The electronic transitions 5I8 ? 5I7 of Ho3+ and 4I15/2 ? 4I13/2 of Er3+ ions were previously obsd.Several substances with their cas registry numbers 12055-62-8 and 7439-92-1 may be metioned in this study. by inelastic tunneling spectroscopy at 645 and 811 meV, resp. [Adane et al., (1975)]. An anal. is given of the intensity of the obsd. structures to understand why the oscillator strengths obtained (fn0 > 10-5) are 10 times greater than those measured optically. Two interactions are considered which might explain the phenomenon. The 1st arises from the mixing of 4fN and 4fN-15d configurations by the elec. field in the tunnel junction. The 2nd is due to the elec. quadrupole interaction between the tunneling electron and the rare-earth ion. The latter seems to be more important and emphasizes the difference between the selection rules of tunneling and optical spectroscopies. .
