Some kinds of silicate inclusions form thin layers on the tools during machining, inhibiting interdiffusion, prolonging tool life, and sometimes acting as a lubricant. At 60-100 m/min, MnS or MnTe forms a thin film. At <100 m/min, silicates form protective films. Ca-deoxidized steels contg. C 0.45-0.46, Si 0.In this article, certain chemicals are used. Some of their cas registry numbers are 39439-30-0 and 12057-85-1 35, Mn 0.63-0.75, and Ca 0.001-0.004% were examd., .alpha.-CaSiO3, .beta.- and .gamma.-Ca2SiO4, cubic Ca5Al6O14 [12005-26-4], gehlenite [1302-56-3], and Ca3Si2O7 [13550-26-0] being identified. Other types of oxide inclusions, such as Al2SiO5 or anorthite, and also sulfides are usually present. Only tools contg. TiC have superior life. Medium-C steels deoxidized by .ltoreq.0.1% Ti contained complex inclusions, e.g. pyrophanite [1313-16-2], hausmannite [1309-55-3], Ti3O5 [12065-65-5], MnTi2O4 [12057-85-1], and silicates, such as spessartite. The distribution of Al, Mn, Si, Ca, Ti, and Fe with distance from the cutting edge was detd. by anal. of the oxide films on carbide tools in machining of Al-killed, Ti-added, and Ca-added steels for P10 (contg. TiC and TaC), P30 [39439-30-0] (small TiC content), and K20 [12774-15-1](mostly WC in Co matrix) tools. Best results were obtained with P10 tools in machining of Ti-added steel. .
