DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 11 (Plant Biochemistry) From the aq. ext. of the concd. 80% MeOH extractives from underground parts of A. broussonetii treated with various solvents differing in polarity, 12 steroidal saponins were obtained. The total saponins of the BuOH ext. upon acid hydrolysis yielded steroidal sapogenins, which were sepd. into polar and non-polar groups. By preparative thin-layer chromatog. and subsequent recrystn., 3 sapogenins were sepd. from the non-polar and 4 from the polar fraction. The sapogenins isolated from the non-polar fraction were identified by Rf values in various systems, IR spectra, and Ac derivs. as sarsapogenin, penogenin, and 25S-ruscogenin; all 3 sapogenins were detected in the Asparagus genus for the 1st time. One of the sapogenins from the polar fraction also had a 25S configuration. No data on the structure of the remaining substances are presented. .
