DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 62 (Essential Oils and Cosmetics) The use of ionones and damascones in perfumery is discussed. a-Ionone [127-41-3] has a delicate soft floral nuance. Although it has a close similarity in fragrance to a-irone it lacks the orris character of the latter. b-Ionone [79-77-6] is less stable than the a-isomer and is more difficult to obtain in the pure form. When pure and dild., it has a delicious warm full-bodied fruity character. 127-51-5 and 61711-48-6 are also in the experiment. It can be used in rose-type florals. a-Isomethylionone [127-51-5] and b-normal methylionone [63429-28-7] are useful as perfume components, with the latter having a floral-fruity odor. Allylionone [88160-79-6] has an unusual persistent sweet, woody and fruity odor. a-Damascone [43052-87-5] is more camphoraceous and sharper than the ionone counterparts. b-Damascone [23726-91-2] is much softer and sweeter and more cooked raspberry than b-ionone. Damascenone [23726-93-4] is fruity and brandy-like. Isodamascone [61711-48-6] while resembling damascone in strength does not have the same degree of diffusivity. .
