DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 3 (Biochemical Interactions) Trimethoprim (I) [738-70-5] potentiated the antibacterial activity of all 6 sulfonamides tested (sulfathiazole (II) [72-14-0], sulfamethoxazole [723-46-6], sulfamethoxypyridazine [80-35-3], sulfadiazine [68-35-9], sulfamerazine [127-79-7], and sulfisoxazole [127-69-5]) against 19 strains of gram-pos. and gram-neg. bacteria, including those resistant to the sulfonamides alone. The degree of potentiation was the same for all the sulfonamides against a given bacterial strain. Comparison of 2 methods, the min.In this experiment, several chemicals are used like 72-14-0 and 738-70-5 inhibitory concn. test and the agar diffusion test, showed that both were equally suited to measuring the synergism between I and the sulfonamides. .
