DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacology) The effect of mexidol administered in a dose of 100 mg/kg (i.p.) was studied in BALB/C and C57BL/6 mice on various emotional stress models including open field test, elevated plus-maze test, and passive avoidance conditioned reflex. Upon a single administration, the drug produces a selective anxiolytic action on BALB/C mice (exptl. animals with a "passive" phenotype of the emotional stress reaction), while not inducing any sedative (tranquilizer) effect in C57BL/6 mice (belonging to the phenotype with "active" emotional stress reaction). .

( Institute of Pharmacology, Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, Moscow 125315, Russia). Eksperimental'naya i Klinicheskaya Farmakologiya, 66(4), 3-5 (Russian) 2003 Izdatel'stvo Folium. CODEN: EKFAE9. ISSN: 0869-2092. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacology) Section cross-reference(s): 14 The effect of mexidol and a-tocopherol on the onset and development of acute epilepsy model was studied in Wistar rats using penthylenetetrazole induced convulsions. The intensity of the nitric oxide (NO) prodn. in the cerebral cortex was detd. by a direct method using ESR. The rate of lipid peroxidn. (LPO) was estd. by measuring the level of secondary products (thiobarbituric acid reactive species). The peak of corazole convulsions is accompanied by a significant increase in the levels of both NO and LPO products. Mexidol (150 mg/kg) and a-tocopherol (100 mg/kg) hindered the development of model convulsions, prevented NO buildup, and inhibited LPO growth. It is suggested that suppression of the excess NO prodn. in the cortex and inhibition of the LPO enhancement can be involved in the mechanism of action of antiepileptic drugs.Except for chemicals metioned above, 127464-43-1 and 10102-43-9 are also used. .
