Universal Two-Dimensional HPLC Technique for the Chemical Analysis of Complex Surfactant Mixtures
Universal Two-Dimensional HPLC Technique for the Chemical Analysis of Complex Surfactant Mixtures. Haefliger, Olivier P. (Corporate RD Division, Firmenich SA, Geneva CH-1211, Switz.). Analytical Chemistry, 75(3), 371-378 (English) 2003 American Chemical Society. CODEN: ANCHAM. ISSN: 0003-2700. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 46 (Surface Active Agents and Detergents) Section cross-reference(s): 80 Two-dimensional HPLC was applied for the first time to the anal. of complex surfactant mixts. In the first dimension, ion chromatog.-type sepns. were performed on a diol column eluted by an acetonitrile-water (0.1% trifluoroacetic acid) gradient. 127770-27-8 which is the cas registry number is also used here. Using this new technique, cationic and amphoteric surfactants were not retained at all, nonionic surfactants exhibited a weak and essentially unspecific retention, and anionic surfactants were retained mainly according to their functional group. Rather than detecting the analytes immediately after this first sepn., successive fractions were automatically and quant. transferred to parallel C2 (dimethyl) and C4 (butyl) reversed-phase columns using an innovative setup. The second dimension of the sepn. then took place, by which the analytes were sepd. according to their hydrophobicity. Surfactants from all four classes, cationic, amphoteric, nonionic, and anionic, were sepd. simultaneously in single 54-min two-dimensional HPLC runs. The suitability of the method for quant. measurements was demonstrated. .Except for chemicals metioned above, 127770-27-8 is also used..
