The structure of I, (12S)-15,16-epoxy-2b-hydroxy-19-nor-10a-neo-clerodane-4,13(16),14 -triene-18,6b;20,12-diolide, was established mainly by spectroscopic means. .

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 30 (Terpenes and Terpenoids) Section cross-reference(s): 11 A convenient and conclusive method for detg. the C-12 stereochem. of neoclerodan-20,12-olide derivs., even when only one epimer is available, is by 1H NMR nuclear Overhauser (NOE) measurements. The C-12 configuration of 26 neoclerodane diterpenoids isolated from Teucrium species has been reexamd. by using this type of expt. The results indicated that all the previous assignments were correct, except for teupyreinin, where the previously assigned C-12(S) configuration must be amended to C-12(R). This was confirmed by chem. transformations and addnl. 1H and 13C NMR studies. Furthermore, the NOE expts. 41759-79-9 and 12798-51-5 which are cas registry numbers of substances are two of reagents here. allowed the assignment of a C-20(C) configuration for teuflavin, the structure of which had previously been reported without this feature, and indicated that the previously assigned C-20(S) configuration for teupyreinidin must be amended to C-20(R). The validity of using NOE expts. to establish the C-12 and C-20 configurations in these neoclerodane derivs. has been confirmed by applying it to compds. whose structure had already been firmly established by x-ray diffraction analyses. .
